The next meeting is a General Meeting on Tuesday March 26, 2024 at 7:00 pm in the Mill Bay Community League Hall located at the Kerry Park Rec Centre (1001 Shawnigan Mill Bay Road).
March Brag Table Theme: Out like a lamb...?
Speaker: Dorothy Kennedy
Topic: Lessons from Ethnobotany
Dr. Dorothy Kennedy is a socio-cultural anthropologist who specializes in the Indigenous cultures of British Columbia and Washington State. After winning the Lieutenant Governor’s medal for the best Master’s thesis at the University of Victoria, Dorothy completed a doctoral degree in anthropology at the University of Oxford, England. She is currently a consultant providing expert opinions on issues of Aboriginal Rights and Title to First Nations, the Attorney Generals of BC and Canada, and corporations. In her spare time, she is the Vice-President of the Cowichan Valley Rhododendron Society and, with her husband, Randy Bouchard, maintains a show garden in Mill Bay, specializing in rhododendrons.
In her talk “Lessons from Ethnobotany,” Dr. Kennedy discusses the research she and Randy Bouchard undertook with ethnobotanist Dr. Nancy Turner among the Okanagan-Colville people of central BC and Washington State in the 1970s. The talk focuses on these people’s identification, classification, and perception of their environment, illustrated by examining a few key plants. Dorothy will also discuss Indigenous management practices the Okanagan-Colville used to maintain plentiful harvests.
Doors open at 6:30 pm with the General Meeting starting at 7:00.
Sunday April 21, at the Mary Winspear Centre in Sidney BC.
The event runs from 9am - 4pm.
This year we are trying something new - the event will be a one-day event, on Sunday April 21, at the Mary Winspear Centre in Sidney on the Saanich Peninsula. Entries in the Show vary from year to year, as we chose different times of the season to showcase different plants. The Propagation Group has been active over the past few years, and so we expect to have a very full range of plants grown by the Club for sale during the Show.
More details may be found by checking out our website at http://www.virags.com.
The 2024 Mill Bay Plantaholics Annual Plant Sale will again be on-line. Our customer base has become so large that it is just not practical to have an on-site sale any longer. The plant list will be sent to our customers during the morning of April 20. We will give you one day to review the plant list and ask that no orders be submitted until 9am on April 21. Plant pick-up will be on May 4 at 2836 Oceanside Lane, Mill Bay. Members of the Victoria Master Gardener Association will be on hand to answer any general gardening questions.
If you are already a customer you will be receiving plant sale alerts and will receive the plant list. If you would like to become a customer please contact Elaine Scott at TheScottRogers@aol.com and you will be placed on the customer list.
Some funds are saved for the purchase of potting soil and seeds for the following year but all other proceeds are donated to the Cowichan Women Against Violence Society to assist with the operation of Somenos House or other related programs.
